Trying Something New: A Family-Focused Mental Health Night

I'm trying something new, and I hope you'll join me.

As a mother of four—two of whom still live at home—the health and well-being of my family has always been at the top of my priority list. Like so many moms, I’ve spent countless hours shuttling kids to doctor and dentist appointments, planning and preparing nutritious meals, and participating in community events to keep everyone active and engaged. You moms out there know exactly what I’m talking about—it’s a labor of love, and it takes a lot of time and energy.

Now that two of my children are grown and out in the world, I sometimes catch myself wondering: Am I giving them the best of me? The truth is, I’m older now. Sometimes I’m just not as energized—or let’s be honest, as enthusiastic—about the things that once felt like second nature. Still, I know how important these efforts are.

That said, maybe the two who are still at home are getting the best of me after all. With age has come a deeper understanding: mental health and emotional well-being are just as vital—if not more so—than any academic achievement or sports team success. These are the foundations that carry us through life.

So, we’re starting something new.

Every Tuesday night, our family is committing to a one-hour mental health masterclass, followed by a board or card game that reinforces the concepts we’ve learned. It’s a simple, intentional way to connect, learn, and grow together.

For example, next Tuesday’s class (completely free and online!) focuses on assertive communication. Afterward, we’ll play Skyjo—our favorite family card game—using the skills we just learned.

If this sounds like something you and your family would enjoy, I’d love to share our planning calendar with you. Maybe we can build something beautiful together—one Tuesday at a time.

Sending you all so much love, courage, and strength.

Warmly,
Leigh
